I've got a question about the book, or rather Neil in the book, does he come across as bitter in it? I have been reading interviews with him and in the latest article that I posted (in the Killing Bono page 2) he comes across to me as being a bit bitter, I guess not having his dream being filled would do that.
Also is the gun part that was told in the, I believe Hot Press interview, in the book, or was that just added to the movie because it seems extreme?

editing to fix my spelling mistake

were you referring to this interview? not sure about where he came across as bitter here. brutally honest and accepting of his faults sure, but not bitter. but then different people perceive things differently.

Neil's book by and large is essentially that-- an honest assessment and recounting of his attempt at fame and fortune. he is very funny and many times very heartwarming. sure he'd have his sarcasm come through several times, but thats part of the humor, and it isnt directed just at the U2 boys, but at himself, his band members and specially those in the music industry. if the man was bitter he'd crucify everybody except himself. but if you read the book, the character he mocks the most is himself.

maybe you're not getting Neil's humor? i must agree that if a certain reader is the type to take things literally or at face value then Neil's humor may not hit the mark at all. what is it in your readings of him that comes across as bitter or negative, maybe i can help explain things?

about the gun.....hmm how do i put this..... in the book Neil recounted his experience with them and the people that deals with them, it was more related on his experience as a crime journalist and not as a rockstar wannabe. in the film its an important storytelling tool. i guess you can say that they took the title a little literally-- but dont fret, as i've said its a tool. initially i was also very doubtful on this addition but i've learned a few things more about production that i realized that its actually kind of a good thing moviewise. sorry i cant say anymore without being explicit. message me if you're still confused over that. ;)

Thanks for the reply. I haven't read the book yet, I can't find it anywhere, so that's probably why I misinterpreted Neil's comments Thank you for explaining it.
I don't tend to take words at face value, because a person's words can come across different than how they were actually said. It was just some of Neil's pass comments and then the new article I didn't get the sarcasm in it. But now that you've explained it a little more I can see that that is what he is being.
I understand about the gun incident now, what you are saying.
I'll probably have more questions about the book later if I can't get to read it.

well Neil said that the UK version of his book (I am Bono's Doppleganger) is officially out of print. the US version though (Killing Bono) is still available in places like Amazon.com. he said that a reprint of his book will be done before year end, presumably as a tie-up to the movie. whether or not it will change covers for the movie remains to be seen, he said something about it entailing a lot of forward planning with his publishers.

So I finally read my copy of "I was Bono's Doppelganger" and I wasn't disappointed.

Based on what I know of the film they've definitely made changes but I think that'll be a good thing. The book is made up of lots of little incidences that probably wouldn't be dramatic enough for the cinema going audience. In the book there isn't really a big climax like the stuff that was filmed on the last night, that seems to have been pulled together from lots of different parts of Neil's life.

I would recommend reading it, it's very easy to relate too. I imagine everyone has been jealous of a friend at some point, it's just that most people's friends aren't world famous rock stars!

Oh and I bought my copy on amazon for about £3 in case you were wondering.
